Hikes near Rome: best trails on the mountains nearby, spots with nature ideal to walk, ride a bike, or camp

1: Campo di Segni is a plateau on the Lepini mountains usually populated by many free animals: horses, donkeys, cows, sometimes also pigs. It's a very wide space that offers several possibilities for hiking. You can opt for a easy walk on the grass, or take one of the trails on the mountains around. If you're ambitious, by reaching the top of mount Lupone you can even see the distant sea. In Campo di Segni picnics and bikes are definitely an option. You may also see local guys on motorcycles, as they quite like the place.

In the right season you can find delicious Porcini mushrooms (september-december), sweet and big blackberries (late august), marroni chestnuts (october-november). Some of the trees in the woods are centenaries, and very beautiful. Even some "simple" musk plants look amazing to me, for the huge size and the interesting shade of green they have!

by car it takes approx. 1 hour 5 minutes from Rome

nearby is the picturesque town Segni, definitely worth a visit. You could also head towards Rocca Massima, another tiny town at 10 minutes drive, from where you'll have a nice panoramic view of the sea (quite far away).

2: Prato di Campoli is a another beautiful plateau, this time on the Ernici mountains, at the south-east of Rome. With a car you can reach the very center of it, and there you have an ideal starting point for hikes on the mountains around. In the woods the are impressive giant beeches, or you can just have a picnic on the grass, enjoy the sun and watch the free animals around: horses, cows, sheeps.

nearby, strongly, strongly recommended, the magnificent monastery Certosa di Trisulti, and the picturesque town Collepardo.

3: Mount Guadagnolo is one of the highest mountains in the Latium region, with on top of it the homonym town Guadagnolo. This is one of the most popular destinations for rock climbing near Rome, and the mountain walls are very easy to reach since they're just few dozens of meters away from the town. There are lots of places for hiking also on the mountains around, and many opportunities to enjoy beautiful panoramic views.
