Interesting facts about the Colosseum: did you know?

Why the name Colosseum? How did it look like in ancient times? How did the gladiatoral shows work? Here are some interesting facts about the Colosseum, the most iconic monument of ancient Rome.

1. Where does the name come from?

In ancient Rome the Colosseum was known with another name: Amphitheatrum Flavium, as its construction started, around 72 AD, at the orders of the roman emperor Vespasian, and was completed after less than ten years by his son Titus, and later partially modified by Domitian, all three part of the Flavian dinasty. The name that we use today, "Colosseum", appeared and became popular only in the medieval age, and there are several theories to explain why.

The most popular theory is that the name doesn't come from its "colossal" size, but because near the Colosseum there was, in the imperial period, a huge statue in honor of emperor Nero, standing just few meters from the amphitheatrum. Some people believe that the name comes from the position instead, as on the same hill where the Colosseum is located there was once a temple of Isis (Collis Isei). And there's also a "black" legend: according to it, a pagan cult to worship the devil existed in the arena once, and there the priests would ask to the initiates "Colis Eum?", do you worship him?
